Tannat

Tannat is a red wine grape that hails from France. It is widely popular in Uruguay where it is labelled the national grape.

The Tannat grape is a strong, dark purple colour which has high antioxidant levels, making it one of the more healthier red wine grapes. The dark colouring of the grape makes way for flavours such as black plum, licorice, dark chocolate and cardamom to emerge. These flavours are intensified the longer the wine spends in maceration.

The most popular Tannat wine is French Tannat and Uruguay Tannat. It is often used as a blending grape in other popular wine growing locations that include Australia, South Africa and Brazil.

Tannat is a rather easy grape to grow and can be planted in a variety of conditions. The thick skins of the grape make it less susceptible to mold and fungus attacks.
