Malbec

Originating from France, the Malbec grape is a rich-flavoured, purple grape that is used primarily in Malbec wine.

The wine is one of the six grapes that can be used in Bordeaux wine along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Carmenère.

The Malbec grape is highly sensitive to frost. During Bordeaux in 1956, frost wiped out three quarters of the Malbec grape which threatened the existence of Malbec wine. Because of this, the grape was replanted and later blended with other wine varieties Merlot and Tannat. These blends allowed for a darker wine to develop.

Ideal growing conditions for the Malbec grape require substantial sun and warmth. The grape will be ready to pick mid-season once it displays a deep-purple colour.

Because the grape has a thin-skin it allows for a juicy wine to be produced.

Malbec is more commonly blended with other popular red wines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay and Bordeaux.
