About Copper & Oak
About Copper & Oak
Copper & Oak Liquor Merchants is an independent, family-owned business with over 50 years combined retail experience. Founded in 2003 and now with two Perth locations one in Tuart Hill and the other in Guildford, the Tuart Hill store showcases an everchanging range of over 1500 unique beers, one of Australia’s largest whisky offerings, 300 plus gins and an extensive yet well curated wine range. Drawing upon the Pestana brother’s heritage, South African wine and spirits complement the diverse offering.
Since 2022 Copper & Oak Guildford has operated from a historic building, with a longstanding liquor background (previously known as Chateau Guildford), located at the start of the Swan Valley, Australia’s second oldest wine region. Naturally, these wines feature prominently here in one of Western Australia’s largest region-specific offerings. Sympathetic and respectful renovations have also expanded the liquor offering into one of the most diverse in the area, if not the state.
Whether tried and true, or new and emerging, Copper & Oak Liquor Merchants have something for everyone, and our experienced team is proud to share them with you.
Our people
Jose Pestana

Jose’s lifelong liquor retailing career began in his teens, and by the age of 20 he had opened his first bottle shop in South Africa, building to four outlets over the following decade. Jose was destined to be an entrepreneur and it was wine that peaked Jose’s love and interest in pursuing the liquor trade which very quickly expanded to an appreciation of beers and spirits too. In 2003 he moved to Perth, Australia and purchased Tuart Hill Liquor which later became Copper & Oak, a name which better reflected the diverse liquor offering in store. Now in his fourth decade of liquor retailing, Jose’s passion for connecting customers with quality liquor is the heart of Copper & Oak Liquor Merchants.
Nelio Pestana

Nelio has been retailing liquor with his brother for over two decades, both in South Africa and Australia. This experience is complemented by a Bachelor of Business majoring in Marketing as well as a Masters degree in advertising, and further wine study garnering WSET Wine Level 2 all of which were achieved with high distinction qualification. Nelio was instrumental in the implementation of Copper & Oak online, plus the 2022/2023 renovation and rebrand of Chateau Guildford to Copper & Oak Liquor Merchants in Guildford.
Guy Southern

Guy’s extensive retail experience spans over 25 years in FMCG and independent liquor retail, supported by Business Management & Administration Graduate Diploma and WSET Wine Level 2 qualifications, both with high distinction. Adjacent to Copper & Oak, Guy’s comprehensive beer knowledge manifests as a beer writer for Crafty Pint, and other publications, WA Good Food Guide Head Beer Judge, Perth Royal Beer Judge, regular radio guest and crafting what is recognised as one of Australia’s best beer Instagram accounts. Guy’s enthusiasm and inquisitive nature extends throughout Copper & Oak with a keen interest in wine, mezcal and collaborative endeavours.
The rest of the Copper & Oak team is equally passionate about sharing knowledge, curiosity, respect and personality, knowing that we connect artisans, large and small, with our community.
