Mourvedre
The Mourvedre grape is used to make red wines and is most popularly grown today in France, Australia, California and South Africa because of the warmer climate needed to thrive.
The grape needs a combination of hot sun and high water supply which can often make it a difficult grape to grow.
The grape lends itself to tannic wines, which are high in alcohol content because of certain compounds and acids contained in the grape.
The grape creates wine with an earthy flavour, and a light red appearance.
In the 1980’s many of the Mourvedre vines were destroyed in Australia as the Government implemented a vine pulling scheme. The vines that survived still produce high quality grapes to this day.
It is common to blend Mourvedre with other popular red wines including Grenache and Syrah.
